Logs make excellent witnesses
Courts have long treated emails, search histories, and cloud files as discoverable. AI chat logs are simply the newest entry in that lineage — timestamped, verbatim, and often more candid than anything else a person has written.
Litigation-hold orders can also freeze deletion: a provider served with one must preserve your conversations even if you press delete.
The chain is only as private as its longest log
- Provider retention windows decide how far back a subpoena can reach.
- Backups and replicas extend that window beyond what the UI shows.
- Third-party processors multiply the number of doors a request can knock on.
Sovereignty ends the scenario
When your assistant runs locally, there is no third party holding a copy, so there is no third party to compel. Your files answer to the same law as the laptop they sit on — and to you.
This is not about evading lawful process aimed at you; it is about not leaving your entire inner monologue in a stranger's filing cabinet, waiting for anyone's lawsuit.
